John Moore was born on 21 December 1886 at Bridge Street, Cavan, the third of six children of farmer and merchant William Irwin Moore and his wife Georgina Richards Moore (formerly Foster, nee Moore). By 1911 he was living at Lisdaran near Cavan with his widowed mother and two of his siblings and working on the family farm.
